WHEN WILL BAYELSA  STATE CONDUCT LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS?

By feefeelo Peter

Following the recently conducted Local Government Election in Rivers State, expectations were high that Bayelsa will be next but the month of June ended without nothing.

Some political analysts said the Local Government election is long over due as caretaker chairmen has been appointed twice in the 8 LGAs.

They said despite the fact that the Senate has raised the issue of INEC to conduct local govt elections, some states are still yet to comply.

One human right activist who don't want his name  mentioned in the press said appointment of caretaker chairmen is a direct violation of Section 1 (2) & 8 CFRN 1999 (3rd alteration).

A legal practitioner said the governors having sworn an oath to protect the Constitution have put themselves in the position of custodians of same, nothing that the oath must be kept religiously without any deviation.

He said  the continued appointment of local council Caretaker committees by governors was illegal.

For now, political gladiators in Bayelsa State  are still waiting when local government election will be conducted.
