UPDATED INFORMATION ON NIGER DELTA UNIVERSITY, 17TH AUGUST - Bodmasnewsblog
Students of Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, on Monday 14th August, shut down the entire institution, following what they described as outrageous increase in all categories of fees in the school.
The students shut the gate to the main entrance of the school, stopping vehicular movement into the campus.
The protest crippled academic and social activities on campus.
The students were said to be angry over hike in school fees, electronic course registrations and non-inclusion of students’ representation in decision-making.
The demonstration, was led by the President of the Student Union Government (SUG), Comrade Kemes Mitin, was peaceful and without skirmishes.
The students lamented that the school authority was gradually turning the state university into a private institution in its quest to raise revenue.
They cried out that the electronic registration per course which was hitherto N1000 had been increased to N4200. They therefore demanded an immediate reversal.
At the time the students lodged their displeasure, the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Samuel Ibobrah, was reportedly out on an official assignment.
On Wednesday 16th August, a Townhall meeting between the students and management was therefore held, below, were the major resolutions:
• No more purchase of course cards for registration of courses. Only online course enrollment only.
• First semester exams will commence, immediately the Nationwide strike is cancelled.
• The Vice-chancellor maintains that charge for E-pin remains N1000, noting that the overblotted fee of N3000 was illegal and would immediately be investigated.
• August 18th School fee deadline payment, registration of courses, has been terminated, other informations will be communicated via sms pending when strike is called off.
• The University chapter of ASUU, joined the Nationwide ASUU strike, embarked upon by it's parent body. Strike is indefinite. All students should be informed.
• N1000 charge on Identity card stands.
• Gst registration portal has been reopened.
• The VC also described the #1,000 Payment for registration of carried over courses as illegal and wrong. Students were hereby advised not to pay a dime for registration of carried over courses.
• The VC advised that for proper communication and working relationship with students, all students will be expected to submit their phone numbers, to avoid further misinformation.
