House on the Rock Church in Abuja, razed by fire
Fire broke out on Sunday, June 25, 2017 at the Abuja branch of the House on the Rock Church sited along the Umar Musa Yar’Adua expressway that leads to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The inferno, which lasted for about five hours, was put out by a combined effort of the Federal Fire Service and other private fire outfits in Abuja.
The pastor of the church, Edbert Abebe, and the commandant of the FCT Command of the fire service, Aderemi Olusola, confirmed the incident to reporters.
They also noted that there were no casualties and that investigation would commence immediately to ascertain the cause of the fire.
“There was nobody in the building, we are not actually meeting in this section of the building; we are meeting in some other section. We will have to carry out investigations to find out what exactly caused the fire but we can’t speculate,” Pastor Abebe said.
Yomi Shogunle, an assistant commissioner of police and head of the Nigerian Police Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit, tweeted a video of the building visibly ablaze while firefighters were struggling to put out the fire.
According to an online newspaper, Signal, a member of the church who worshipped there Sunday morning that the main church building has been under renovation for a while and services have been holding at the church annex building.
Headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, House on the Rock was founded by Pastor Paul Adefarasin.
The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained at the time of this report.
